Cylinder Head Gasket
The cylinder head gasket is located between the engine and the cylinder head. It plays the most critical sealing role in the engine to prevent the engine from failing due to the fusion of gasoline and water. Generally speaking, the internal combustion engine of a car uses a water-cooled gasoline four-stroke design. The three circulation circuits are the flammable air or fuel mixture, the water-based coolant mixed with ethylene glycol, and the lubricating oil. However, once the substances in these three circulation circuits are mixed together, it will cause the engine to overheat, the oil to burn, or the coolant to burn.
If the cylinder head gasket fails, the following series of problems will occur:
(1) Reduced compression force—the power of the car will be reduced, or the engine will be unstable.
(2) Exhaust gases are forced into the cooling system, causing the oil and coolant to mix, increasing engine wear and making it more susceptible to overheating.
(3) Coolant leaking into the cylinder (internal leak)—causing exhaust problems and damage to the catalytic converter. In addition, large amounts of coolant leaking into the cylinder can cause hydraulic lock problems, resulting in extensive engine damage.
(4) External leaks—gas and coolant accumulate under the engine.
(5) Compression leaks into the small gap between the engine and the head gasket; when the engine is turned off, this trapped air can escape into the coolant and create bubbles. If these bubbles are trapped in the engine coolant thermostat, they can cause severe engine overheating, and the gap between the head gasket and the engine can gradually increase.
All of the above situations are related to head gasket failure. Sometimes, the driver can still drive normally with excessive exhaust gas coming out of the exhaust until all the coolant is used up, eventually causing the engine to overheat.
Cylinder head gaskets can be roughly divided into the following four types:
(1) Multi-layer iron cylinder head gasket - the most common cylinder head gasket for modern engines. It usually consists of three layers of iron: the top layer is a rubber surface coating (layer), the contact surface (layer) has wave-stopper technology, and the bottom layer is fully coated on the inside and partially coated on the outside.
(2) Solid copper cylinder head gasket - Cylinder gaskets made of solid copper are very durable. However, they require special O-ring processing technology to place a coil around the cylinder ring and lock it onto the copper.
(3) Composite cylinder head gasket - Made of asbestos and graphite, it is an older type of cylinder gasket. Due to health reasons, the use of this type of cylinder gasket is gradually decreasing.
(4) Flexible cylinder head gasket - This type of cylinder gasket is usually used in Rover Group's K series engines. Its cylinder gasket design has been used with unprecedented success in Formula 1 sports cars. However, this design has a persistent phenomenon that has not yet been solved. The cylinder gasket cannot cope with the problem of unstable joints.
A pressure gauge or leak test can be used to check the condition of the cylinder head gasket. At the same time, when the exhaust pipe starts to emit white or blue smoke, it means it is time to replace the cylinder head gasket. Although the cost of the cylinder head gasket is not high, it is very time-consuming to replace the cylinder head gasket, so the labor cost accounts for nearly 75% of the cost. In addition, unmaintained cylinder head gaskets will cause greater damage to the engine, which will require higher repair costs.
